After more than five years of experience protecting the tourists that visit Costa Rica during high season, the Tourism Police of the Ministry of Public Safety (MSP) works on an operational project to satisfy their needs.

This year, the Tourism Police has worked along institutions and national and international organisms with the purpose of improving its work in the different tourism areas of the country.

The purpose of the plan is to offer personalized attention to the travelers since the moment they arrive to the airport, in order to cover any doubts and give them the required preventive measures for their stay.

As part of the main warnings there are: carrying only the necessary belongings when traveling and don’t forget leaving valuable objects in the trunks of the buses.

Currently the Tourism Police has a total of 314 officers in different cities and towns in all the provinces of the country.

According to Jorge Rodriguez, sub-director of the Tourism Police, during high season the operations reach 100%, so it’s necessary to strengthen the efforts in all the regions, mainly in Puntarenas, Guanacaste and San Jose, which are the most visited by tourists. The surveillance should also be increased in the different ports of the country due to the large number of cruises that are arriving in the next months.

In case the visitor loses his passport for the theft of his belongings, the Tourism Police will transfer you to migration or the respective embassy in order to get it back or make a copy. In the case of money, the Police will contact your relatives for them to send some to you.

If the tourist suffers any violence conflict, he must present a complaint to the Judicial Investigation Organism (OIJ).
