The National Theater is presenting as from December 1st the Christmas ballet “The Nutcracker 2011” of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, under the artistic direction of West Chapman, original choreography of Maria Malia Pendones and Patricia Carreras, and the support of the Costa Rican Company of Inter-American Productions, specialized in organizing high quality events.
The production will have 12 shows, where around 100 dancers will give the best on stage to offer a high quality show, most of them coming from rural zones.
According to Pendones, director of the academy Danzay, “the dancers were selected according to the roles that need to be played; it’s supposed to be an experience and job opportunity for those who have the potential, so serious students of classic ballet have the priority”.
One of the peculiarities of the show is that the female characters will be represented by Costa Rican women, since in past years foreign women took the parts.
As from this year, the production of The Nutcracker is an event created and managed by Pendones and Carreras, due to the change in the administration of the National Theater, which now only serves as stage for the event.
Throughout the years, The Nutcracker has become a community activity for being one of the most longed shows by the Costa Ricans in different sectors. The quality of the local and foreign dancers, along with the colors, elegance and magic, has been a success factor in the presentation of this show.
The show will last about two hours and you can buy the tickets in Mundo Ticket.
