The “bombas” (oral expressions of the daily life of the people of Guanacaste) and the typical yell “guipipia” will be heard in the traditional Civic Festivities of Liberia, taking place from February 23rd to March 4th, 2012 in Liberia, Guanacaste.

The main attractions of these celebrations are the typical bull rides, where several daredevils ride a bull inside an arena or run in front of it. The bull is not hurt or harmed in any way; the idea is to touch it without getting lifted by its horns.

Folkloric dance performances, dance expressions, theater, typical food stands (corn tortillas, “gallo pinto” and “chorreadas”), concerts with local and international artists, fireworks, handcraft exhibits and art pieces that reflect the culture of Guanacaste are part of the large menu of cultural activities offered by this event.

You can also join the tradition of dancing in the streets to marimba music (typical instrument of Costa Rica) along masquerades (tradition in which huge masks with colorful clothes dance to the music, typically used in civic festivities of the country).

You can participate in “La Diana”, activity that takes place at 5:00am, where a group of people plays trumpets, trombones and tubas and throw firecrackers to wake all the villagers of Liberia for them to enjoy the party.

The Civic Festivities of Liberia have been held for more than 50 years with the purpose of exposing the every day life of the people of Guanacaste, as well as its natural landscapes and treasures of the zone, to promote and support Costa Rica’s culture locally and abroad.

For second time in a row, the event is arranged by five members chosen by the Town Council of Liberia, who explained that the celebrations are always held because they receive a large number of visitors.

The festivities will have an operative by members of the Public Force in the fairground and its surroundings for the safety and enjoyment of all the visitors.
