New norms are created for the consumption of species of environmental interest
November 21, 2011

With the objective of performing responsible fishing practices, the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT) included new norms to its Certificate of Tourism Sustainability.

The MarViva Foundation is a regional, non-governmental and non-profit organization whose action area is located in the Eastern Tropical Pacific. Its mission is to promote the conservation and sustainable use of the marine and coastal resources, through the support given to the processes of Marine Spatial Ordering, which is achieved through:

  • Creation of discussion spaces oriented to the improvement of the norms of human activities at sea.
  • Technical and scientific support to governments, communities, companies and other decision makers in the formulation of policies and actions.
  • Strengthening of the community participation.
  • Assistance in the management and control of the Protected Marine Areas (AMP).
  • Sensitization through tools of social communication.

The Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT) included in the “Guide of Compliance of the Certificate of Tourism Sustainability” several norms related to the consumption of species of environmental interest.

The initiative arose because fish like the sailfish and the marlin have decreased their populations drastically, more than 82%. The marlin is known as bicuda, and is highly migratory and very important for sportfishing, since it produces more incomes than commercial fishing of the same species.

The marlin shows conditions similar to the sailfish, so the new guidelines of the program of the Certificate of Tourism Sustainability promote that tourism businessmen don’t include these species in their menus.

As part of the main actions there are: the purchasing of fish and seafood products along with a guide that has the scientific name of the species, assure their customers that the species they bought for the restaurant meet the minimum recommended sizes for fishing and not offering in the menus food prepared with species of sportfishing.

MarViva, whose mission is to promote the conservation and sustainable use of marine resources, has as main purpose support the ICT with the objective of propitiate responsible fishing practices.
